Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Delta North Senatorial District after defeating incumbent senator Ned Nwoko in the party’s primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The APC direct primary election, conducted across the nine local government areas in Delta North, ended in a decisive victory for Okowa, who polled 113,309 votes to defeat Nwoko, who secured 2,612 votes. Another aspirant, Maryam Ali, reportedly received 40 votes.
The results were announced by the APC Returning Officer, Prof. Johnbull Tonukari, who stated that Okowa maintained commanding leads across nearly all the local government areas in the senatorial district.
One of the biggest talking points from the primary was Okowa’s victory in Nwoko’s local government area, where the former governor reportedly secured 5,480 votes against Nwoko’s 1,343 votes, a development party members described as a major upset.

The victory marks a significant political comeback for Okowa, who previously served as senator representing Delta North from 2011 to 2015 before becoming governor of Delta State between 2015 and 2023.
Political analysts believe the outcome could reshape the balance of power within the APC in Delta State, especially as the party prepares for the 2027 elections. The primaries also highlighted growing internal competition among top political figures in the state.
Meanwhile, supporters of both camps have continued to react to the outcome, with party leaders calling for unity ahead of the general election campaign season. Reports indicate that the APC described the exercise as peaceful and transparent despite heightened political tensions before the primaries.
Okowa’s emergence now sets the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive senatorial contest in Delta North as political alignments ahead of 2027 continue to evolve.
