The Confederation of African Football has named Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its Acting Secretary General.
Adamu’s appointment comes after the resignation of Véron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down on Saturday to focus on personal ventures and is reportedly preparing to run for the presidency of the Congolese Football Federation.
Historic milestone
This appointment is a landmark moment, as Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to hold the position in CAF’s 70-year history.
Before this role, he served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events (Director of Competitions) since 2018, where he successfully supervised the organization of nearly 30 continental competitions.
His appointment was recommended by the CAF Executive Committee and later approved by the CAF Congress during a meeting in Cairo, Egypt.
New responsibilities
As Acting Secretary General, Adamu will oversee CAF’s administrative functions and coordinate major upcoming football events, including preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (Africa Cup of Nations) qualifiers and the African School Football Championship.
Background
Adamu is a graduate of the prestigious FIFA Master programme and holds a degree in Business Management and Computer Science from the American University of Paris. Before joining CAF, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the Copa Lagos futsal tournament.
He is also the son of Amos Adamu, a respected Nigerian sports administrator and former member of both FIFA and CAF Executive Committees.
CAF is expected to provide updates on the appointment of a permanent Secretary General in the near future.
