Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from his position in the Federal Executive Council.
His resignation was confirmed on Monday, with officials stating that the move is part of his plan to contest the Bauchi State governorship election in 2027.
Sources indicate that Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu in compliance with a federal directive requiring political appointees seeking elective office to step down.
The directive, issued earlier in March through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, mandated all affected officials to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
Tuggar is expected to contest under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with supporters already signalling an imminent declaration of his governorship bid.
His exit marks one of the first major cabinet changes ahead of the 2027 general elections, as more ministers with political ambitions are expected to follow suit.
Tuggar, who assumed office as foreign affairs minister in August 2023, previously served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany and as a member of the House of Representatives.
