A lawmaker representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Lamido, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the party’s inability to tackle escalating insecurity and protect lives in his constituency.

Lamido announced his resignation in a statement, saying the decision takes immediate effect and was driven by worsening bandit attacks and the hardship faced by residents.

“My decision is based on the party’s failure to safeguard the people I represent,” he said, highlighting the persistent violence that has continued to devastate communities across the region.

Sokoto State, like much of Nigeria’s North-West, has in recent years grappled with recurring incidents of banditry, kidnapping and killings, forcing many residents to flee their homes and disrupting livelihoods.

The senator said repeated efforts to draw attention to the crisis had yielded little response, adding that remaining within the ruling party would no longer serve the interests of his constituents.

He stressed that his decision was not politically motivated but rooted in the need to stand with communities facing daily threats from armed groups, insisting that government must prioritise the protection of lives and property.

The resignation is expected to deepen political realignments in Sokoto State, with indications that some of the lawmaker’s associates may be considering alternative political platforms ahead of the 2027 elections.

The development also underscores growing pressure on authorities to address Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, particularly in regions where banditry and terrorism continue to take a heavy toll on civilian populations.
