Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Friday made an unscheduled visit to a Nigerian Breweries Plc facility in Aba, inspecting the site of a fire outbreak that occurred the previous day and using the occasion to call for heightened safety culture and sustained emergency preparedness across the state.
The fire, which broke out at approximately 3:20 p.m. on Thursday at an open space leased from the Nigerian Railway Corporation, was brought under control by the Abia State Fire Service before 6:00 p.m. Officials confirmed that the blaze was contained to an area of empty crates with no bottles affected and, crucially, no casualties recorded.
Governor Otti commended the state fire service for what he described as a timely and effective intervention that prevented the incident from escalating into something far more damaging. Speaking at the scene, he expressed relief at the outcome while reflecting on the unpredictable nature of fire incidents, particularly in open spaces.

“Looking at that place, it’s probably the last place that you’d expect to have a fire incident because it was just on its own, in an open field, so anything could have happened, It could be a match, it could be a cigarette or anything, but you should be prepared, like the Boy Scouts will say, while we pray it doesn’t happen again.” -Otti said.
The governor disclosed that he had closely monitored the situation in real time on Thursday but only later established that the affected facility belonged to Nigerian Breweries, as the leased space is located at a considerable distance from the main brewery plant and digital tracking did not immediately identify the company’s ownership.
Otti took the opportunity to reassure investors that his administration remains committed to providing the enabling environment necessary for businesses to thrive in Abia State. “What the government owes investors is an enabling environment for their business to continue to do well, and that is what the new Abia speaks about,” he stated.
The Brewery Manager, represented by Chief Engineer Benjamin Okore, led the governor on a tour of the affected site and provided a detailed account of the incident response. Okore clarified that the fire occurred entirely within an open area outside the main brewing plant and confirmed that the company’s internal emergency response system was activated immediately upon detection before external support from the Abia State Fire Service was requested. He commended the fire service for its prompt intervention and noted that the company was still conducting a full assessment of the extent of the damage.
Governor Otti was accompanied on the visit by the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, the mayors of Aba North and Aba South Local Government Areas, and other senior government officials underscoring the administration’s seriousness in attending to matters that affect investor confidence and public safety in the commercial capital of the state.
