WASHINGTON — Donald Trump has ordered the United States Navy to enforce a blockade of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, marking a sharp escalation in tensions with Iran after the collapse of high-stakes peace negotiations.
The directive follows the breakdown of talks held in Islamabad, where U.S. officials and Iranian representatives failed to reach agreement on key issues, particularly Tehran’s stance on its nuclear ambitions.
Announcing the move, Trump said the blockade would take effect immediately, with U.S. naval forces instructed to intercept vessels linked to Iranian ports and prevent maritime traffic that could bolster Iran’s economic leverage.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but critical waterway, handles a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments, making the decision one with far-reaching global implications. Analysts warn that any disruption in the channel could trigger spikes in energy prices and deepen geopolitical instability.
U.S. military officials indicated that operations would include intercepting ships that have paid transit fees to Iran and clearing naval mines allegedly deployed in the area. Meanwhile, the blockade is expected to target traffic to and from Iranian ports rather than completely shutting down international passage.
Iran has reacted strongly, warning that any enforcement of the blockade would be treated as an act of war. Its Revolutionary Guard has vowed a forceful response if U.S. or allied vessels attempt to restrict access to the strait.
The development comes amid a fragile ceasefire in the broader conflict, with both sides previously signaling willingness to negotiate. However, the failure of talks has now heightened fears of renewed military confrontation in a region already on edge.

Global markets have begun to respond to the uncertainty, with investors flocking to safe-haven assets and oil prices showing signs of volatility as the crisis unfolds.
Diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations are ongoing, but with military assets mobilized and rhetoric intensifying, the prospect of de-escalation remains uncertain.
