President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were safely evacuated after a gunman opened fire during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C.
The incident occurred Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, where hundreds of journalists, government officials, and guests had gathered for the annual event. Reports said the suspect attempted to breach security before gunshots were heard near a screening area.
Secret Service agents immediately moved Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vance, and other senior officials to secure locations as attendees ducked for cover and chaos unfolded inside the venue.
Authorities said the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives before being subdued and taken into custody by law enforcement officers at the scene.
One Secret Service agent was reportedly struck during the confrontation but survived due to protective body armor. No senior government official was injured.
Following the incident, the annual dinner was canceled as investigators secured the scene and launched a probe into the motive behind the attack.
Trump later praised the swift response of security personnel and confirmed that all key officials were safe.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is one of Washington’s most prominent political and media gatherings, traditionally attended by top government leaders, journalists, and celebrities.
