Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed that political party affiliation and state of origin are not factors considered in appointments made by his administration in Abia State. The governor stated that merit, competence, and capacity remain the primary standards guiding his decisions on public appointments and recruitment into government positions.
Otti made the remarks in Umuahia during the wedding ceremony of his Aide-de-Camp, Emeka Ogbonna, where he referenced the officer’s appointment as an example of merit-based selection.
According to him, he did not consider the officer’s place of origin before assigning him the role, stressing that ability to deliver was the only issue that mattered. The governor added that his administration is open to qualified individuals regardless of whether they belong to the APC, PDP, Labour Party, YPP, or any other political platform.

He also explained the appointment of Dr. Ezinne Benjamin-Kalu as Chairman of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital Management Board, saying the selection followed a competitive interview involving seven candidates.
Otti said the successful candidate emerged clearly ahead of others, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to transparent and merit-driven appointments. The governor noted that the same principle applies to wider recruitment exercises, including the hiring of over 5,000 teachers and plans to recruit an additional 4,000 educators across the state.
He maintained that appointing the most capable people remains essential for effective governance, better service delivery, and sustainable development in Abia State.
