Tech billionaire Elon Musk has failed to appear before French prosecutors following a summons tied to an ongoing investigation into his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter).
Musk was expected to attend a voluntary interview in Paris on April 20 as part of a widening probe led by the French cybercrime unit. However, he did not show up, with authorities confirming that his absence will not halt the investigation.
The inquiry, which began in January 2025, initially focused on allegations of algorithm manipulation and fraudulent data practices. It has since expanded to include serious concerns such as the spread of child sexual abuse material, AI-generated deepfakes, and other illegal content linked to X’s artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.

French authorities had earlier raided X’s offices in Paris as part of the investigation, signaling the seriousness of the case and growing regulatory pressure on global tech platforms operating in Europe.
Despite the summons, Musk has denied any wrongdoing, previously describing the probe as politically motivated. His non-attendance adds to mounting tensions between the United States and European regulators over issues of free speech, digital governance, and jurisdiction.
Legal experts note that while the summons was voluntary at this stage, continued refusal to cooperate could lead to stricter legal measures, including the possibility of escalating the investigation into a formal criminal case.
Other executives linked to X, including former CEO Linda Yaccarino, have also been summoned as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The case underscores increasing scrutiny of major technology platforms and their responsibilities in curbing harmful and illegal online content, particularly in Europe’s tightening regulatory environment.
