Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed,

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has officially resigned from the party and announced his move to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

Baba-Ahmed made the announcement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, saying his decision followed internal disagreements within the Labour Party and a perceived departure from its founding principles.

According to him, the Labour Party is no longer the same organisation it once was when he joined, alleging that internal developments had made continued membership untenable.

“I am leaving the Labour Party at midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination,” he said, describing the Peoples Redemption Party as a historic platform with strong ideological roots.

He added that his exit was not driven by personal grievances against individuals but by broader concerns over the direction of the party and Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, said the PRP’s long-standing political heritage made it a more suitable platform for his next political chapter.

The PRP, founded in 1978, is one of Nigeria’s oldest political movements, known for its progressive ideology and grassroots orientation.

His defection is expected to further reshape opposition alignments ahead of future elections, as political actors continue to reposition across parties.
