The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the growing use of security agencies, particularly the police, in handling defamation and civil-related disputes, warning that such actions threaten constitutional freedoms and democratic principles in Nigeria.

The association issued the warning while reacting to recent controversies involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and alleged attempts to use law enforcement agencies against critics and media practitioners.

According to the NBA, defamation matters are largely civil disputes that should be resolved through the courts rather than through arrests, intimidation, or police invitations. The body stressed that the misuse of security agencies for personal or political battles undermines the rule of law and weakens public confidence in democratic institutions.

The lawyers’ association cautioned public officials against deploying state institutions to silence dissenting voices, warning that such actions could create a climate of fear and suppress freedom of expression guaranteed under the Constitution.

The warning follows increasing public debate over alleged intimidation of journalists, activists, and critics through petitions and police actions linked to defamation claims. Human rights advocates have also repeatedly criticised the growing criminalisation of speech-related offences in Nigeria.

The NBA maintained that law enforcement agencies should focus on combating serious crimes rather than intervening in disputes that are civil in nature. It urged the Nigeria Police Force to remain professional and avoid being drawn into political or personal conflicts.

The association further emphasised that democratic governance thrives on accountability, criticism, and free public discourse, adding that elected officials must learn to tolerate scrutiny from citizens and the media.

The latest development adds to mounting concerns among civil society organisations and media rights groups over press freedom and civic space in Nigeria.
