The Abia State Government has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed the development in a press statement, saying Governor Alex Otti approved the directive as part of efforts to improve public safety and urban transportation.

According to the government, the ban will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.

The state government explained that the policy is aimed at strengthening security, improving public safety, easing traffic congestion, and promoting a more organized and efficient transportation system across the affected cities.

Commercial motorcycle operators have been directed to cease operations within the designated metropolitan areas before the implementation date.

The government also directed security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

It warned that anyone found violating the order would be arrested, while the motorcycle used in the illegal operation would be confiscated in accordance with the law.

Residents, transport operators, community leaders, and members of the public have been urged to cooperate with the government and security agencies to ensure the successful implementation of the policy.

The government maintained that the measure forms part of the Alex Otti administration’s broader efforts to improve security, enhance orderliness, and modernize the state’s transportation system.
