Amnesty International has condemned the latest deadly attack in Plateau State, accusing the administration of Bola Tinubu of failing to address worsening insecurity across the country.

The rights organisation described as “horrific” the midnight attack on Ngbra-Zongo village in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, where at least 12 people were reportedly killed by gunmen.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Amnesty International said entire families were allegedly trapped inside their homes and killed during the assault, warning that Plateau communities are increasingly living in fear of repeated attacks.

According to the organisation, “The utter failure of President Bola Tinubu’s government to address widespread insecurity is costing lives.” Amnesty further stated that Nigerian authorities had repeatedly failed residents of Plateau State despite recurring violence and killings.

The group argued that many rural communities across Plateau had effectively been abandoned to armed groups, resulting in repeated attacks, displacement, destruction of homes, and growing humanitarian concerns.

Amnesty International noted that the latest incident adds to a series of deadly attacks recorded in Plateau State in recent months, including killings in Anguwan Rukuba and other communities where dozens of residents lost their lives.

The organisation also criticised what it described as delayed security responses and inadequate protection for vulnerable communities, insisting that repeated government condemnations without concrete action were no longer sufficient.

Plateau State has remained one of the flashpoints of violent attacks linked to armed groups, communal tensions, and banditry in Nigeria’s North-Central region. Human rights groups and security analysts have repeatedly warned that the deteriorating security situation could worsen if urgent preventive measures are not implemented.

President Tinubu had earlier visited Plateau State following previous attacks and promised stronger security measures to protect residents. However, Amnesty International insists the current security strategy has failed to stop the killings.

As of the time of filing this report, presidential spokespersons had yet to officially respond to Amnesty International’s latest criticism of the federal government over the attack.
