Labour Party begins recalibration ahead of 2027 elections
In a bold move aimed at repositioning the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 general elections, National Chairman Barr. Julius Abure has called on Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, to formally resign from the party and align with the newly formed coalition platform.
Abure made the call on Friday in a statement issued from Abuja, urging the embattled governor to stop sending mixed signals about his political allegiance.
“We are in a hurry to recalibrate and reposition the Labour Party for 2027,” Abure stated. “Otti’s recent actions and political affiliations clearly indicate he has moved on, and we believe it’s time he made it official.”
Mixed Signals and Political Crossroads
Governor Otti recently claimed in a public interview that he still considers himself a member of the Labour Party. However, his political actions tell a different story. From reportedly conducting Abia’s local government elections under the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) to funding the controversial Labour Party caretaker committee, many within the party see his claims as deceptive.

Abure did not mince words:
“How can he say he’s still with Labour when the very committee he supports—led by Senator Nenadi Usman—has already joined the coalition platform, now formally identified with the African Democratic Congress (ADC)? Even Usman stood beside Nasir el-Rufai at the coalition unveiling!”

Suspension and a Clear Path Forward
The Labour Party had previously suspended Governor Otti indefinitely over alleged anti-party activities. Abure emphasized that the party would not be swayed by high-profile figures whose loyalties lie elsewhere.
“We are sanitizing the party,” Abure added. “Labour Party is not part of any coalition. Such alliances lack ideology and are mere power-hungry marriages of convenience. We’re not in this to grab power at all costs—we’re here to serve, guided by principle.”
The party’s leadership is calling for a clean break from individuals they view as opportunistic or ideologically inconsistent. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, Labour Party is doubling down on its identity and core values.

“Move On, Governor Otti”
Barr. Abure concluded his statement with a direct message to the Abia governor:
“Dr. Otti cannot be in Labour Party and work against it. All his allies have moved on what exactly is he still doing here?”

According to a release by Labour Party National Publicity Secretary Mr Obiora Ifoh, He said the Labour Party sets its sights on 2027, it’s clear that internal cleansing and strategic alignment are top priorities. Whether Governor Otti officially exits or continues to straddle the political fence remains to be seen—but the message from the party’s top leadership is loud and clear.
