In the heart of Ohanku Ndoki village, surrounded by the quiet green fields of Ukwa East in Abia State, children are showing up to school not to desks and chairs but to cracked walls, leaking roofs, and floors that double as their classrooms.

Here, the joy of learning battles daily with the sting of abandonment.
The images tell their own story. One shows children seated on cold, dusty concrete, their eyes scanning the teacher for meaning, their backs pressed against stained, cracked walls. In another, entire school blocks stand in ruins, windows shattered, roofs caved in, weeds claiming what once was a space for dreams and discovery.

These are the current conditions of Okotoko Primary School, Ikwuorie Community Primary School, and Ikwuorie Comprehensive Secondary School all government-owned schools. Schools that once gave hope to generations in this community.
Today, they are held together not by cement or structure, but by the stubborn resilience of a people who refuse to give up on their children.

Look at this teacher, standing tall in a tattered classroom, continues to teach with the dignity the building has lost. With no blackboard, no tables, and not a single bench, she still shows up, because the children do. They sit on the floor, holding their books in their laps. Some have shoes, others donโt. But they are all present. Ready to learn.

But how long can this spirit survive in ruins?
This reality came into sharper focus after an urgent directive from Ukwa East LGA Chairman, Hon. Chibunna Akara, calling on councillors to list schools in need of urgent repair. The Councillor of Ikwuorie Ward, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Chinonyerem Ekeke, quickly responded, providing evidence these very pictures that reveal a crisis far beyond broken buildings. This is about broken promises.

Now, the case lies before the Office of the Governor and the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
But we cannot afford silence. The children of Ohanku Ndoki are not asking for luxury only the bare minimum: a safe classroom, a desk to write on, a roof that wonโt collapse on them.
We call on Governor Dr. Alex Otti to act swiftly. These children are the future of Abia State. They must not be left to learn in ruins.
Education is a right, not a reward. Let us restore dignity to these schools and hope to these children. Let no child in Abia State be forced to learn in a building that would shame us all.

This is no longer just a development issue. This is a humanitarian one. These children are waiting. And hope, like buildings, can collapse if left unattended.
