The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the killing of Mene Ogidi, a handcuffed suspect allegedly shot dead in Effurun, Delta State.

The officer at the centre of the incident, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, was captured in a viral video shooting the suspect, triggering widespread public outrage and condemnation.

Police authorities said findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and other internal processes confirmed that the officer acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and established rules governing the use of firearms.

Following the review, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of Usman and other implicated officers. The IGP approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.

The police further disclosed that upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers would be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over the unlawful killing.

Describing the act as unacceptable, the IGP reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force maintains zero tolerance for extrajudicial actions and abuse of power, stressing that “no uniform confers the right to take life outside the law.”

He assured the victim’s family that justice would be served and urged members of the public to remain calm, adding that the force remains committed to accountability, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
