Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, amid renewed political consultations and growing support from various interest groups.
According to reports, close associates of the former president confirmed that Jonathan had resolved to return to the presidential race after extensive consultations over the political platform most favourable to his ambition. Sources within his camp said the PDP was eventually selected as the preferred vehicle for his possible return to power.
The development has reportedly triggered intense lobbying among several northern and diaspora-based political groups seeking to purchase the party’s presidential nomination form for the former leader. The PDP nomination form is said to cost about N100 million.

Among the groups allegedly mobilising support for Jonathan are the Coalition for Jonathan, the Goodies Movement, the Northern Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan, and other youth-based political organisations across northern Nigeria.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015, has repeatedly maintained publicly that he would consult widely before making a final decision regarding the 2027 election.
The former president’s potential return is already generating reactions across the political landscape, especially within opposition circles seeking a formidable challenger against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC ahead of the next general election.
However, possible constitutional debates over Jonathan’s eligibility to seek another term are also resurfacing, with some political figures arguing that legal interpretation may ultimately determine whether he can contest again.
