Labour unions have condemned the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, warning of potential disruptions to national economic activities if the decision is not reversed promptly.
The warning was issued in a statement jointly signed by the Rivers State Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Alex Agwanwor; State Chairperson of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Ikechukwu Onyefuru; and Chairperson of the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC), Chuku Emecheta.
The unions expressed concerns over the legality of the federal government’s decision, highlighting its economic and political consequences. They described the suspension of elected Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and members of the House of Assembly as unjustified and a violation of democratic principles.
Labour leaders emphasized that these officials were duly elected by the people of Rivers State and argued that any attempt to remove them outside constitutional procedures undermines the democratic system. They insisted that the decision must be reversed to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.
The unions also pointed to the immediate economic hardship caused by the emergency rule, particularly for local government workers who have reportedly not received their salaries. They warned that withholding wages at a time of rising living costs has exposed workers to severe financial distress.
Cautioning against the broader economic impact, the unions noted that Rivers State plays a vital role in Nigeria’s economy and the Niger Delta region. They argued that political instability in the state could further exacerbate the country’s ongoing challenges, including inflation, currency depreciation, and rising unemployment.
Labour leaders further warned that the crisis has deterred potential investors, affecting the state’s internally generated revenue and long-term economic prospects. They stressed that while maintaining law and order is necessary, it must be done within the framework of the Nigerian Constitution.
The unions criticized the suspension of elected officials and the alleged disruption of salary payments, stating that such actions infringe on workers’ rights and could worsen security and economic instability. They urged the federal government to prioritize citizens’ welfare over political interests, warning that neglecting workers’ well-being would only increase tensions.
They called on President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the judiciary to take immediate steps to reverse the state of emergency and reinstate the suspended officials. To prevent further escalation, they recommended meaningful dialogue between the federal government and relevant stakeholders.

While encouraging workers to remain calm and continue their duties, the unions made it clear that if their demands were not met within a reasonable timeframe, they would take strategic industrial actions that could significantly impact national economic activities.
