The Rivers State Police Command has arrested three persons, including the leader of a local vigilante group, over the alleged torture and killing of a man in Ahoada West Local Government Area of the state. The arrest followed a coordinated intervention by community youths and security operatives who reportedly intercepted the suspects while attempting to dispose of the victim’s remains.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred in Okogbe Community, where the deceased was allegedly subjected to severe torture by members of a local vigilante outfit. Authorities confirmed that the victim, identified as Gaddafi, was reportedly accused of stealing palm fruits before he was attacked by the suspects.

Security sources revealed that the vigilante group chairman, identified simply as Joshua, was arrested alongside another member, Friday Silas, and a motorcyclist, Obed Godlove. The trio was apprehended in Ukpeliede Community when they allegedly attempted to secretly dump the victim’s corpse.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects carried out the assault following allegations of theft against the deceased. However, the situation reportedly escalated into mob justice, resulting in the fatal torture of the victim. Authorities have condemned the act and reiterated warnings against extra-judicial punishment by community-based security groups.

Police authorities disclosed that the suspects are currently in custody and will face prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations. The command emphasized its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens from unlawful acts regardless of the perpetrators’ status or affiliation.

Community leaders and residents have expressed shock over the development, calling for justice for the deceased and urging security agencies to intensify oversight of vigilante operations. Stakeholders also stressed the need for proper training and regulation of local security outfits to prevent similar incidents.

Security analysts have long warned about the dangers of vigilante excesses, noting that while such groups sometimes support law enforcement efforts, cases of torture and extra-judicial killings undermine justice and public safety. Authorities have therefore urged residents to report suspected criminal activities to lawful security agencies rather than resort to mob action.
