The Nigerian Senate has appointed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia-North under the APC, as the inaugural Chairman of the newly established Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC). This commission is one of the regional development bodies recently signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.
The announcement was made by Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, during a plenary session on Tuesday. Prior to this new role, Senator Kalu served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation.
In addition, Senator Ken Eze (Ebonyi Central) has been named the Vice Chairman of the SEDC Committee. Akpabio further noted that other committee members would be announced in due course.

With this appointment, Senator Kalu will lead the committee in overseeing the South-East Development Commission’s operations to ensure the achievement of its objectives. The commission’s responsibilities include addressing civil restitution, combating erosion, enhancing security, and developing critical infrastructure in the South-East region.
The Senate also confirmed the appointment of an 18-member management team for the SEDC. Dr. Emeka Nworgu was named as the Commission’s Chairman, while Hon. Mark Okoye will serve as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Other key members of the commission include:
– Ugochukwu H. Agballah
– Hon. Okey Izenwa
– Chief Hyacinth Ikpor
– Chidi Echeazu
– Ifeanyi Agwu
– Nasiru Usman
– Hamma Adama Ali
– Kumo Edward David Onoja

Additional appointments include:

– Hon. Toby Okechukwu (Executive Director, Projects)
– Senator Anthony Agbo (Executive Director, Commercial and Industrial Development)
– Dr. Clifford Ogbede (Executive Director, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Rural Development)
This strategic move underscores the Senate’s commitment to fostering development and stability in the South-East region through the SEDC’s comprehensive mandate.
