Speakers of the Houses of Assembly across the South-East have commenced deliberations in Awka, Anambra State, on measures to review and standardise legislative procedures across the region.
The meeting is part of the South-East Zonal Conference of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria and is themed, “Legislative Review and Standardisation of Procedures Across South-East States.”
The conference provides an opportunity for the state legislators to compare legislative practices, exchange institutional experiences and strengthen cooperation among the region’s Houses of Assembly.
The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly and South-East Zonal Vice Chairman of the Conference, Somtochukwu Udeze, received the Speakers of the Enugu and Ebonyi State Houses of Assembly, Uche Ugwu and Moses Odunwa, respectively, in Awka for the conference.
The deliberations are expected to focus on legislative procedures and standards, with the objective of promoting greater consistency and efficiency in the operations of the various state legislatures.
The Speakers are also expected to share experiences on lawmaking, legislative administration, representation and oversight, while exploring ways to deepen inter-parliamentary cooperation across the South-East.
As part of the conference activities, Udeze led the visiting Speakers on a tour of selected facilities in Anambra State, including Solution Fun City and Anambra Country Club.
The visiting lawmakers expressed satisfaction with the facilities inspected and commended the Anambra State Government for its investments in infrastructure and other sectors.
The conference comes amid efforts by state legislatures across Nigeria to strengthen institutional capacity and improve legislative processes at the sub-national level.
The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria serves as a platform for state legislative leaders to promote collaboration and advance issues affecting the effective functioning of state Houses of Assembly.
