The Supreme Court has nullified the decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had earlier recognised Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
In a unanimous ruling delivered by a five-member panel, the apex court held that the Court of Appeal exceeded its jurisdiction by pronouncing Abure as the party’s national chairman.
The Supreme Court noted that having earlier identified the crux of the matter as a dispute over party leadership, the appellate court ought to have refrained from making any declaratory pronouncements.
The court reiterated that issues concerning the internal leadership of a political party fall outside the jurisdiction of the judiciary.
In delivering its judgment, the Supreme Court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman and another appellant, describing it as meritorious.

Conversely, the court dismissed the cross-appeal filed by the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party, deeming it without merit.
