The Abia State Government has announced that the monthly sanitation exercise for August will hold on Saturday, August 30, 2025, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

According to a statement authorized by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, movement of people and vehicles during the three-hour period will be restricted. Only those on essential duties will be allowed passage, provided they present valid identification or official authorization.

The directive also mandates Local Government Chairmen, traditional rulers, town union leaders, religious leaders, and youth and women organizations across the state to mobilize, monitor, and ensure active participation in the exercise.

In addition, all markets, motor parks, transport companies, and business premises are to remain closed on Friday, August 29, 2025, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. to carry out their own clean-up. The government confirmed that waste disposal trucks will be on standby Saturday to evacuate refuse collected during the exercise.

Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, have also been directed to assemble at their usual take-off points for deployment.

Residents are advised to stay at home during the exercise, clean their surroundings, and ensure the use of face masks while working. The statement further warned that defaulters will be arrested and prosecuted under the Abia State Basic Environmental Law.

The notice was signed by Obioma Chidinma Success, Public Relations Officer, for the Honourable Commissioner.
