
France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, has dismissed remarks by Donald Trump about his marriage as “not worthy of response,” describing them as lacking both elegance and decorum.
Speaking during an official visit to Asia, Macron made clear his displeasure after Trump mocked his relationship with his wife, Brigitte Macron, in comments delivered at a private gathering in Washington.
Trump had reportedly joked that Macron was “still recovering” from an incident involving his wife, while mimicking a French accent and criticising France’s stance on ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Gulf.
In response, Macron declined to engage directly with the remarks, stating that they “do not merit a response” and were “neither elegant nor up to standard,” in a thinly veiled rebuke of the US president’s tone.
The exchange has triggered criticism across France’s political spectrum, with officials condemning Trump’s comments as inappropriate, particularly at a time of heightened global tensions.
