The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its planned indefinite nationwide strike following fresh commitments by the Federal Government to address outstanding welfare issues.
The decision was reached after an emergency virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Council, where members reviewed interventions by senior government officials and relevant agencies.
According to NARD, the government has reversed its earlier decision on the reviewed Professional Allowance Table (PAT), with implementation expected to reflect in April salaries and subsequent payments.

The association also said authorities renewed commitments to settle outstanding promotion arrears and salary arrears owed to resident doctors in affected institutions nationwide.
In addition, initial approval has reportedly been secured for the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), with assurances that the disbursement process will be concluded.
Despite suspending the planned industrial action, NARD stated that it would continue to monitor the level of compliance and take further decisions if the commitments are not fully implemented.
The development offers temporary relief to Nigeria’s healthcare sector, which has frequently faced disruptions caused by recurring labour disputes and welfare concerns.
