A Satirical Take on Political Acrobatics in Nigeria, the place of Abia as 2027 looms
In the bustling streets of Nigeria and the industrious lanes of her commercial cities, there is a tale that could be told for generations. It is the story of a man who ruled a State while in two parties. No, not two political terms, but two political parties, is that even possible? Yes, it sounds absurd, but in the wild jungle of Nigerian politics, anything is possible. Again this is just a satire!
Let’s come home! Dr. Alex Otti, the current occupant of the Abia State Government House, is perhaps the most beloved and industrious governor the state has seen in recent memory. Roads are being constructed, salaries are being paid on time, and Aba is beginning to resemble the commercial hub it was destined to be. People are singing his praises louder than a Pentecostal choir on a Sunday morning somewhere in Aba.
Even Mama Nkechi, who has never seen a good thing in politics since after the days of Dee Mbakwe, now waves a Labour Party flag proudly, screaming mama, papa, pikin!

But politics in Abia is never a straightforward affair, oh my bad, politics in Nigeria, some say Nigeria is a theater and we are all acting a script, funny right?. Let me even remind you of Hon. Ben Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, a proud son of Bende, who recently dropped a prophecy that sent shockwaves through the state: “Otti will be the last Labour party governor of Abia State.”
Last governor of labour party? Was this a divine revelation or just political hyperbole laced with bitter kola?

To make matters more dramatic, Labour Party, the platform that brought Governor Otti to power, has become a metaphorical masquerade dance. At the federal and state levels, there’s a leadership tussle so chaotic that even Chinedu Igbokwe a.k.a Ad movies, a Nollywood scriptwriter and Director would struggle to keep up.
Peter Obi, the party’s biggest figure, has mastered the fine art of political neutrality, choosing to stand on the fence like one NPFL referee who officiated the dramatic match between Enyimba FC vs Doma United in Aba, overturning his own decisions over an offside or not three times. Confusion everywhere.
In Abia, the Labour Party drama reached a crescendo a few weeks before the Local Government elections on Novermber 2nd 2024. Labour Party members, perhaps sensing that their political Titanic was sinking faster than anyone could say “Obidient,” defected to Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
In an astonishing political twist, they won 15 out of the 17 local government areas, while the Young Progressives Party (YPP) clinched two. Labour Party, the governor’s own party, was left with a humiliating zero as empty as a pot of jollof rice after a wedding party.
The Governor, ever the gentleman, pretended not to notice the mutiny. After all, it takes more than political betrayal to shake a man who survived the Nigerian banking sector. But as the dust settled, one thing became clear: Gov. Otti must take a stand now or risk becoming the governor of a party that exists only in name. Some Abians say they don’t care as far they see the dividends of democracy.
Dont act like you don’t know that defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have become the new trend. It’s almost as if there’s a secret APC induction camp somewhere in Mbano camp, not again sorry Dom Nik I mean the state where politicians are baptized with palm wine and handed party cards.
Some Labour Party and Peoples Democratic party leaders, now wearing APC caps, claim they’ve “seen the light.” One wonders what kind of celestial vision could turn red into blue so suddenly. The 8th wonder of the world.
As 2027 looms, the question on everyone’s lips is simple: Will Governor Otti remain a Labour Party governor or join the defectors in their APC pilgrimage?
Will he find solace in APC, as it seems the party already has 1st, second, third even Fifth Eleven player eyeing the number 1 seat in Abia
His acceptance and impressive work in Abia are undeniable, but politics is a game of alliances. He must decide whether to remain loyal to a fragmented Labour Party or embrace political pragmatism.
Abians are watching closely, popcorn in hand, waiting for the next episode of this political blockbuster. One thing is certain: in Abia politics, truth is often stranger than fiction. And as for Hon. Benjamin Kalu’s prophecy, only time will tell whether it was a political rant or a Nostradamus-level prediction.
But if Otti doesn’t take a stand soon, he may indeed become the last labour party governor of Abia State, at least on Labour Party’s ticket.
In all may Abia succeed !
