The All Progressives Congress (APC) has explained why Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has not been formally welcomed into the party despite his earlier defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Party leaders disclosed that internal procedures and structural issues within the party in Rivers State remain key factors delaying an official reception for the governor.

The National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, clarified that the party operates through laid-down processes which must be respected before any high-profile political figure is fully integrated. He noted that although Fubara had shown commitment to the party, formal recognition requires proper alignment with established party structures.

Fubara’s defection to the APC in December 2025 marked a major political realignment in Rivers State politics, especially following a prolonged crisis between him and key political figures in the state. His switch to the ruling party also followed the movement of several lawmakers and political stakeholders who aligned with the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, the APC continues to grapple with factional disagreements within its Rivers State chapter. Political stakeholders have argued that the governor’s association with a particular faction of the party has contributed to the delay in his official welcome, as rival groups within the party claim legitimacy and control of the party structure in the state.

Political tensions in Rivers State have also intensified following the governor’s defection, with disputes linked to control of party structures and legislative alignments. Analysts say these divisions reflect broader political rivalries that have shaped governance and party leadership struggles in the oil-rich state in recent years.

Despite the delay in formal recognition, APC leaders have reiterated that the party remains open to Fubara and other defectors, stressing that membership is guided by constitutional processes and internal consultations. Party officials maintain that ongoing dialogue and reconciliation efforts are expected to stabilise the Rivers chapter and strengthen the party’s position ahead of future elections.
