Manchester City boosted their fading Premier League title ambitions with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, overturning a late deficit in a pulsating contest. The reigning champions looked set for defeat before producing a late turnaround, with Bernardo Silva equalising before Erling Haaland converted a stoppage-time penalty to seal maximum points.

The encounter remained fiercely contested from the start, with City dominating possession but failing to break Liverpool’s defence in the first half. Haaland came close to opening the scoring on several occasions, but Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker denied the Norwegian striker and kept the match goalless at the interval. Despite City’s early pressure, Liverpool gradually found their rhythm and threatened on the counterattack.

Liverpool eventually took the lead in the 74th minute through Dominik Szoboszlai, whose stunning free-kick clipped the inside of the post before nestling in the net. The strike appeared to place the hosts firmly in control as City struggled to respond during the second half, continuing a trend of inconsistent performances after the break this season.

City, however, produced a late surge to turn the match around. With six minutes remaining, Silva capitalised on defensive lapses to volley home from close range after connecting with Haaland’s header. The equaliser shifted the momentum in favour of Pep Guardiola’s side and set the stage for a dramatic finale.

The decisive moment arrived in stoppage time when Alisson fouled Matheus Nunes inside the penalty area, gifting City a crucial spot-kick. Haaland stepped up and calmly converted to secure all three points and cut Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to six points. The match ended amid controversy as a late City goal was ruled out following a VAR review, which also resulted in Szoboszlai being sent off.

The victory marked City’s first league win at Anfield in front of supporters in over two decades and provided renewed momentum in the title race. While the champions remain outside the top positions, the comeback victory underscored their resilience and maintained pressure on Arsenal. Meanwhile, the defeat dealt a setback to Liverpool’s ambitions of securing European qualification next season.
