Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that moves to deregister the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) are part of what he described as a dangerous attempt to establish a one-party state in Nigeria.
Atiku argued that any attempt to remove opposition parties through judicial or administrative means undermines democratic principles and threatens political pluralism in the country.
“You can’t attempt to rule the people against their will and still pretend that you’re committed to free and fair elections in 2027,” he said.
The former vice president warned that weakening opposition parties could erode public confidence in the democratic process and restrict Nigerians’ ability to make meaningful electoral choices.
He also urged members of the judiciary to remain impartial and resist any efforts to involve the courts in actions that could undermine Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The comments come amid growing political debate over recent developments affecting opposition parties and increasing concerns among political stakeholders about the future of multiparty democracy in Nigeria.
