The Ebonyi State Government has approved an upward review of the minimum wage for civil servants from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000, with immediate effect.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, disclosed this while briefing journalists on Thursday after the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting.

Omebe explained that the decision underscores the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare.

We want to state categorically that this is not a political statement. This government does not joke with the welfare of its workers,” he said.

According to him, the state has already cleared pension and gratuity arrears of retirees dating back to the creation of Ebonyi in 1996. He added that verification for local government retirees is ongoing and that payments would follow once the process is completed.

He stressed that if the government could shoulder such financial obligations without politicizing them, adding ₦20,000 to workers’ pay should not be seen as political.

Omebe further praised Governor Nwifuru’s leadership, describing him as “a leader and builder of capacity, human beings, and infrastructure,” adding that the administration is guided by the biblical “people’s charter of needs” mantra.

The EXCO also approved the implementation of the eight-year tenure policy for directors, which mandates the immediate retirement of permanent secretaries and directors who have served in the same cadre beyond the stipulated period.
