Enzo Maresca Rejects ‘Copy and Paste’ Label as He Begins Manchester City Era

Enzo Maresca has made one thing clear in his first press conference as Manchester City’s new manager: he has no intention of becoming a “copy and paste” version of Pep Guardiola.

Taking over after Guardiola’s historic decade at the Etihad Stadium, the Italian faces one of football’s toughest managerial jobs. Yet despite their shared coaching philosophy and previous working relationship, Maresca insists he wants to create his own identity.

“I want to do my job in the way I believe is best,” Maresca explained. “Every manager has a different way of seeing football, and I don’t believe in simply copying someone else.”  

Following a Legendary Manager

Guardiola leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, winning multiple Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, and transforming Manchester City into one of Europe’s dominant clubs.

Maresca knows those achievements raise expectations, but he believes the club’s strong structure gives him confidence that success can continue.

Having previously coached City’s academy teams before serving as Guardiola’s assistant during the Treble-winning campaign, the 46-year-old is already familiar with the club’s culture and playing philosophy.  

Building His Own Identity

While many expect Manchester City to continue playing possession-based football, Maresca emphasized that his tactical approach will reflect his own ideas rather than being an exact continuation of Guardiola’s methods.

The new City boss revealed he has remained in contact with Guardiola since learning he would succeed him. According to Maresca, the outgoing manager encouraged him to stay true to himself—a message Guardiola had publicly shared before leaving the club.  

Trophy Expectations Remain High

Maresca acknowledged that managing Manchester City means silverware is the expectation, not the ambition. However, he stressed that his immediate focus is on improving the team every day instead of looking too far ahead.

He also confirmed that the club will decide on a new captain before the season begins while providing an update on Rodri, who is expected to undergo back surgery before returning later in the campaign.  

A New Chapter at the Etihad

Replacing one of football’s greatest managers will inevitably bring comparisons, but Maresca appears determined to write his own story.

His challenge will not be to recreate Guardiola’s success exactly, but to evolve Manchester City while maintaining the winning standards that have defined the club over the past decades
