The Federal Government has announced plans to clear 500 hectares of land in Benue State to promote ranching and dairy production.
Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Maiha, disclosed this during a visit to the Benue Livestock Investigation and Breeding Centre in Raav, Gwer East Local Government Area on Saturday.
Maiha noted that the centre, which sits on 2,400 hectares, has the potential to support large-scale ranching and dairy farming. However, he expressed concern that despite its vast land area, the facility currently houses only 37 animals, with most of its infrastructure in a dilapidated state and in need of urgent rehabilitation.
To kick-start the revitalization process, he announced that the government would begin by clearing 500 hectares, ensuring it is ready for pasture before the next rainy season.
“We will form a small committee to recommend steps for revitalizing this centre. Our goal is to establish two key enterprises here—one focused on dairy production and the other on ranching,” Maiha stated.

The committee will also propose the development of essential infrastructure, including animal pens, isolation centres, maternity pens, dipping facilities, housing, and chalets.
Additionally, the minister revealed that the centre would collaborate with Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, to enhance livestock research and development.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, Director-General of the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the state government’s vision. He noted that ranching would help address security challenges and allow displaced farmers to return to their ancestral lands.
He also commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for his commitment to building a sustainable livestock industry that benefits the state’s economy.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister also visited the Benue Swine and Crop Improvement Project in Yadev, Gboko LGA, and the International Cattle Market in Makurdi as part of his tour.
