The Lagos State Government has announced plans to begin the controlled demolition of the distressed 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Lagos Island on Thursday, October 15.
The decision follows a structural assessment by relevant agencies, which found that the fire-damaged building posed a significant risk to public safety.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, announced the planned exercise in a public safety advisory issued on Wednesday.
He said the demolition would be carried out in a controlled and professional manner, in line with established safety standards, to protect lives and property.
According to the agency, the immediate surroundings of the building will be cordoned off, while access to the affected area will be restricted throughout the operation.
LASEMA also warned that temporary traffic diversions would be introduced on adjoining streets, with residents and road users likely to experience some noise and dust during the exercise.
The agency urged traders, business owners, residents and motorists to avoid the area where possible, use alternative routes and comply with instructions from emergency responders and traffic management officials.
Oke-Osanyintolu said LASEMA would work with other relevant state agencies to coordinate safety arrangements and minimise risks during the demolition.
The planned exercise follows a devastating fire that engulfed the commercial building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on December 24, 2025.
The high-rise structure, which housed businesses dealing in clothing materials, shoes, bags and other goods, sustained extensive damage during the inferno. Part of the building also collapsed during the incident.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had ordered the demolition after visiting the scene in December 2025, citing concerns over the building’s structural condition and the safety of surrounding properties.
The demolition is intended to remove the danger posed by the weakened structure in the densely populated commercial district.
LASEMA appealed to members of the public to cooperate with emergency and traffic officials throughout the operation.
