Former Senate Chief Whip and ex-governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has spoken out about the challenges facing Nigeria’s federal lawmakers, emphasizing that they are often taken for granted despite their significant contributions. In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kalu revealed that he has tightened his belt in response to the current economic hardships.
Tightening Belts Amid Hardship
When asked if he had adjusted his lifestyle due to financial difficulties, Kalu affirmed, “The Assembly does not control any money. We sign the budget and it goes to the MDAs [Ministries, Departments, and Agencies]. For me, I have tightened my belt.”
Kalu also highlighted the misconception surrounding the role of lawmakers, stating that their efforts are often overlooked while their salaries attract criticism. He noted, “Before, I usually thought these lawmakers just sat there. But there’s a lot of work going on there. I’m telling you the truth. Sometimes I don’t go to my house until 11 pm sitting in different committee meetings.”
Addressing Public Perception
There is a widespread belief that Nigerian lawmakers are among the highest-paid legislators globally, which often draws public scrutiny. However, Kalu argued that people fail to recognize the substantial responsibilities and workload of lawmakers. He stressed, “People take Senators and House of Reps members for granted. But it’s not supposed to be like that. We should be respected.”
Kalu clarified the division of roles within government, explaining, “We agreed that we’re not the people running the country’s economy. Our duty is to make law, and another arm of the government will execute the laws we’ve made.”

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu
Orji Kalu’s remarks underscore the need for greater understanding and appreciation of the legislative arm of government. As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic challenges, it is essential to acknowledge the efforts of lawmakers while fostering transparency and accountability in governance.
