A United States federal judge has reportedly received a private reprimand following findings that she engaged in a sexual relationship with a senior police officer inside courthouse chambers during official working hours.
The judge was identified in multiple U.S. media reports as Judge Eleanor Ross of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, an Obama-era appointee confirmed by the Senate in 2014.
According to details released by a judicial conduct panel and later reported by Bloomberg Law, the relationship allegedly lasted for about two years and involved encounters that were reportedly audible to courthouse staff and law clerks working nearby.
The police officer involved was identified as Atlanta Police Department Deputy Chief Kelley Collier, a senior law enforcement official within the department. Reports indicated that investigators considered the situation a serious lapse in professional judgment because the police department regularly appeared in matters before the federal court.
The investigation reportedly began after complaints from a law clerk who alleged that the judge engaged in inappropriate conduct within chambers during business hours. Judicial investigators later concluded that the conduct created an uncomfortable work environment for court staff and raised concerns over possible conflicts of interest and ethical breaches.
The judicial panel also stated that the judge initially denied aspects of the allegations before later admitting to the relationship during the investigation. Additional concerns reportedly included attendance at a partisan political event and issues relating to supervision of clerks within chambers.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, the disciplinary action issued against the judge remained private rather than public. The judicial council reportedly cited her eventual cooperation, expressions of remorse and what investigators described as a “propensity for rehabilitation” as reasons for imposing a lesser sanction instead of stronger disciplinary measures.
As part of the resolution, the judge reportedly agreed not to seek leadership positions within the judiciary, avoid serving on certain judicial committees and issue apology letters to affected former clerks.
The controversy has triggered wider debate within U.S. legal circles about accountability and transparency in judicial misconduct cases, especially where judges are accused of conduct that may undermine public confidence in the justice system. Critics have questioned whether a private reprimand was sufficient given the nature of the allegations and the potential ethical implications involved.
