The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has officially transferred regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Abia State to the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA).

In a statement issued by the Commission, NERC confirmed that the Abia State Government met all legal requirements, formally notified the Commission, and requested the transfer in accordance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electricity Act 2023.

As part of the transition, NERC has directed the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to establish a subsidiary that will handle the intrastate supply and distribution of electricity within Abia State. The Commission will, however, retain regulatory authority over interstate and international electricity generation, transmission, trading, and system operations.
