Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has sparked widespread reactions after encouraging Nigerians, particularly women and young people, to embrace small-scale businesses such as selling akara and roasted corn as viable means of livelihood.
The First Lady made the remarks while speaking on economic empowerment and entrepreneurship, stressing the importance of self-reliance and the need for citizens to take advantage of available opportunities to generate income.
According to her, small businesses have the potential to provide financial stability, reduce unemployment, and contribute to economic growth when properly managed.
Her comments, however, triggered mixed reactions on social media and among members of the public. While some Nigerians agreed that entrepreneurship at all levels should be encouraged, others argued that the remarks highlighted the country’s economic difficulties and the limited opportunities available to many citizens.
Critics contended that many Nigerians expect broader economic policies that create jobs and improve living standards rather than encouraging survival through petty trading.
Supporters of the First Lady’s comments, however, maintained that there is dignity in honest labour and that several successful entrepreneurs started from small-scale ventures before expanding into larger enterprises.
The debate has once again brought discussions about unemployment, poverty, entrepreneurship, and economic opportunities to the forefront of national discourse.
