Borussia Dortmund secured a narrow 2-1 victory over CF Monterrey in a tense Round of 16 match at the Club World Cup, booking a high-profile quarterfinal showdown with Real Madrid.

The win, held Tuesday night at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, earned BVB an additional $13.125 million in prize money. Dortmund will now face Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid on Sunday at 4:00 a.m. (local time) in East Rutherford.

However, the match will be without the much-anticipated sibling rivalry between Jobe Bellingham and his older brother Jude Bellingham, a former Dortmund star now with Real Madrid. Jobe, 19, picked up a second yellow card of the tournament early in the match and will be suspended for the quarterfinal.

Guirassy’s First-Half Double Seals Victory

Dortmund looked dominant in the first half, putting in their strongest performance yet on U.S. soil. Serhou Guirassy netted twice within ten minutes (14th and 24th minutes), both times assisted by Karim Adeyemi, whose pace and precision carved open Monterrey’s defense.

The Bundesliga side appeared in control heading into the break, boosted by a cooler evening kickoff at 9 p.m. and more favorable conditions compared to their previous matches in Cincinnati.

Second-Half Nerves as Monterrey Fight Back

But the tone shifted quickly after halftime. German Berterame, an Argentine-born Mexican international, headed in a goal in the 48th minute, halving the deficit and reigniting the passion of the large contingent of Mexican fans in the stadium.

Dortmund’s defense grew shaky, making several unforced errors that allowed Monterrey to press aggressively. However, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel stood firm, making key saves to preserve the lead.

Despite the pressure, BVB managed to hang on, though the second-half performance exposed vulnerabilities that Real Madrid may look to exploit in the next round.

A Battle of Giants Awaits

The quarterfinal meeting with Real Madrid promises to be one of the highlights of the tournament. While Dortmund will miss Jobe Bellingham, all eyes will be on how they match up against the European champions, led by midfield maestro and former BVB favorite Jude Bellingham.
