Fresh legal challenges have emerged for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) as a suit has been filed before the Federal High Court seeking to halt the swearing-in of the association’s president-elect and other newly elected national officers.
The suit, filed by an aggrieved legal practitioner, is challenging the conduct and outcome of the NBA’s recent national elections, alleging that the electoral process was marred by irregularities that undermined its credibility.
The plaintiff is asking the court to issue an interim injunction restraining the NBA, its Electoral Committee and other relevant parties from proceeding with the inauguration of the president-elect and other elected officials pending the determination of the substantive suit.
According to the court filings, the applicant contends that the alleged breaches during the election process violated the association’s constitution and electoral guidelines, making the outcome liable to be set aside.
The suit also seeks declarations on the legality of the election and requests consequential orders that would prevent the implementation of the disputed results until the court reaches a final decision.
The latest action adds another layer to the legal disputes that have trailed the NBA’s leadership transition, raising fresh concerns about the association’s electoral process and governance.
As of the time of filing this report, the court had yet to fix a date for hearing the application, while the NBA had not issued an official response to the fresh legal challenge.
The outcome of the case is expected to determine whether the planned inauguration of the association’s newly elected national officers will proceed as scheduled or be temporarily halted pending judicial determination.
