Desmond Elliot

Desmond Elliot has publicly apologised to Femi Gbajabiamila over tensions arising from the Lagos State House of Assembly leadership crisis.

The Surulere Constituency I lawmaker made the apology during an appearance on TVC’s Your View programme on Friday, where he described Gbajabiamila as his political mentor and appealed for forgiveness if he had offended him in any way.

“I’m sorry, my daddy, if I’ve offended you in any way,” Elliot said while reflecting on their long-standing political relationship. He added that he learned politics under Gbajabiamila’s guidance and referred to him as his “egbon” (elder brother).

The apology followed recent comments by Gbajabiamila, who disclosed that he nearly lost his position as Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2025 Lagos Assembly speakership crisis because of allegations linking Elliot to the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

The political crisis began in January 2025 when Obasa was removed as Speaker by lawmakers over allegations of misconduct and abuse of office while he was outside the country. Former Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was subsequently elected as the first female speaker of the Lagos Assembly before later stepping down following interventions within the ruling APC leadership.

Elliot, however, denied involvement in the impeachment plot, stating that he was in South Africa during the period the political developments unfolded. He maintained that he was shocked by claims suggesting he masterminded the crisis.

According to him, he remained loyal to party leadership and would continue working towards strengthening the All Progressives Congress in Surulere and Lagos State.

The lawmaker also apologised to what he described as the “matriarch of Surulere,” while insisting that political disagreements should not destroy long-standing relationships.
