Chief Emeka Diwe, President of the Association of Igbo Town Unions in the South East, has emphasized that the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu stands to gain significant respect and goodwill by releasing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. In a recent conversation with National Concord, the business expert highlighted how Kanu’s release would be seen as a demonstration of respect for democratic principles on a global stage.
βWhat would the government lose if they release Nnamdi Kanu, especially when there is a legal precedent for it? The court has ruled for his release. Why keep him? Obeying that court order won’t harm the government’s egoβit would actually be a plus for this administration, as it would showcase their respect for the rule of law,β Chief Diwe asserted.

He emphasized that following legal rulings and upholding democratic values would earn President Tinubu’s administration international accolades. The decision, according to Chief Diwe, would portray the government as a respecter of the judiciary and a promoter of human rights.
Chief Emeka Diwe also addressed the pressing security challenges plaguing the South East, stating that the government’s current approach has been flawed and insufficient. According to him, security issues must be addressed from a local perspective to be effective.
“Insecurity is a local issue and must be approached as such. Any security architecture not configured with underground, community-driven support is bound to fail,” he said.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s decision to bring in external operatives, including private militias like Asari Dokubo’s group, to tackle insecurity in the region. Chief Diwe warned that such measures would only lead to chaos and unnecessary violence.

β
Security is local; therefore, any solution must also be local. Whenever thereβs an attack, itβs the locals who are best positioned to respond. You need local elements to contain it,β he emphasized.
For over five years, the Association of Igbo Town Unions has consistently called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu through print media campaigns every two months. Chief Diwe believes that Kanuβs release will create a clear distinction between genuine freedom fighters and criminal elements who exploit the regionβs unrest for personal gain.
βReleasing Nnamdi Kanu will separate freedom fighters from terrorists. His continued detention only fuels more unrest and makes it difficult to address the real security threats in the region,β Chief Diwe explained.
Chief Emeka Diwe’s message is clear: releasing Nnamdi Kanu is not just a matter of justice, but also a strategic move that could stabilize the South East, bolster democratic principles, and earn President Tinubu’s administration global recognition. It’s a step the government can take at no cost, but with immense benefits for peace and unity.
