Kwankwaso with his membership card after registering as member of the ADC on Monday, March 30, 2026.

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kano State, a move that has drawn prominent opposition leaders to witness the event.

The former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, who recently resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), completed his registration with the ADC on Monday at his residence in Kano. His decision comes amid a strategic realignment of opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Top political figures were present to receive Kwankwaso, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Tambuwal, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi. Their appearance highlighted growing unity among opposition leaders seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Other notable personalities at the event included ex-National Chairman of the APC John Odigie-Oyegun and veteran politician David Mark, both signalling broader support for the opposition coalition building around the ADC platform.

Kwankwaso’s formal defection follows a directive from the Kwankwasiyya Movement for its members to join the ADC, underscoring a concerted effort to consolidate opposition strength ahead of next year’s polls.

As political realignments continue, the ADC is positioning itself as a major opposition force, with the participation of influential leaders joining from various parties, reshaping Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of critical elections.
