A deadly explosion has rocked Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, triggering panic among residents and raising fresh security concerns in Nigeria’s insurgency-hit North-East.
The blast occurred on Monday evening near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), with authorities confirming that emergency responders and security operatives were swiftly deployed to the scene.
According to the Borno State Police Command spokesperson, Daso Kenneth, reports of explosions were received around 7:20 p.m., including incidents near the popular Monday Market and the hospital gate. Bomb disposal experts and other security units were immediately mobilised to assess the situation and secure the affected areas.
Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of confusion, fear, and mass movement as residents fled the area following the blast. While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, officials have urged the public to remain calm and avoid the vicinity as investigations continue.
The incident is part of a broader pattern of insecurity in the region, where insurgent groups have carried out repeated attacks on civilian and military targets. In recent weeks, security forces have reportedly repelled attempted હુમ (attacks) on the outskirts of Maiduguri, even as concerns grow over renewed militant activity.
Authorities have yet to officially confirm the cause of the explosion or identify those responsible. However, the North-East region has long been affected by violent activities linked to extremist groups, making incidents of this nature particularly alarming for residents.
As investigations continue, the latest explosion serves as a stark reminder of the fragile security situation in Borno State, with residents once again confronted by the realities of life in a conflict-prone zone.
