No fewer than nine people have been burnt beyond recognition, while eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries, following a tragic road accident along the Bauchi–Darazo Road in Bauchi State.
The fatal crash occurred on Monday and involved a Toyota Hiace passenger bus and a trailer, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). The impact of the collision reportedly triggered a fire that engulfed the vehicles, leaving several occupants trapped.
The FRSC said nine victims died at the scene after they were burnt beyond recognition, while emergency responders rescued eight injured passengers and rushed them to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Road safety officials and other emergency personnel were immediately deployed to the scene to extinguish the fire, rescue survivors, and clear the wreckage to restore the free flow of traffic.
The bodies of the deceased were evacuated and deposited at a mortuary after the recovery operation was completed.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC indicate that the crash may have resulted from traffic violations, although authorities said a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
The Corps reiterated its call on motorists to obey traffic regulations, avoid dangerous driving, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long journeys.
Road crashes remain a major public safety concern in Nigeria, with excessive speed, dangerous overtaking, fatigue, and poor vehicle maintenance frequently identified as leading causes of fatal accidents.
The FRSC urged drivers to exercise greater caution, especially on highways, stressing that adherence to road safety rules is essential to reducing accidents and saving lives.
