The Oyo State Government has announced a temporary curfew across 10 local government areas surrounding the Old Oyo National Park as part of intensified efforts to combat kidnapping, banditry, and other security threats in the region.
According to a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, the curfew will take effect from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. beginning Wednesday, June 24, and will initially remain in force for 48 hours. The measure was approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as security agencies step up operations aimed at restoring peace and protecting residents.
The affected local government areas include Oriire, Orelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo, and Atiba.
Government officials said the decision followed growing concerns over criminal activities around communities bordering the Old Oyo National Park. Authorities believe restricting movement during the designated hours will assist ongoing security operations and help curb the activities of kidnappers and other criminal elements operating within the area.
Residents have been urged to comply fully with the directive while security personnel conduct coordinated operations across the affected local governments. The state government assured citizens that the measure is temporary and intended to improve public safety and restore normalcy to the affected communities.
Meanwhile, political observers are awaiting reactions from prominent national figures, including Kenneth Okonkwo. As of the time of filing this report, no verified statement from Okonkwo regarding the curfew had been made public.
