Paraguay has declared a national holiday to celebrate its qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the country’s first appearance in the tournament in 16 years.
President Santiago Peña made the announcement late Thursday after the Albirroja’s 0-0 draw with Ecuador in Asunción secured the final automatic South American qualifying spot. The decision sparked nationwide celebrations, with thousands of fans flooding the streets.
“This day is dedicated to honoring the epic campaign that has inspired the entire nation, though some critics argued the holiday was excessive.” – Peña said
Paraguay last featured at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where they reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual champions Spain. Their return in 2026 — co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada — will be their ninth World Cup campaign.
“There are kids who have never seen Paraguay in a World Cup, This is a moment generations have been waiting for.” -Peña added.
