The visit is being held at the invitation of King Charles III, signaling the importance attached to Nigeria as a strategic partner to Britain.

Both countries previously entered into a strategic partnership in November 2024 to enhance collaboration across these sectors.

Historical records indicate that the last Nigerian leader to embark on such an official visit was former military president Ibrahim Babangida, who visited the United Kingdom in 1989.
President Tinubu and King Charles have maintained cordial diplomatic interactions in recent years. The two leaders have met on several occasions since assuming office in May 2023, including engagements during international climate summits and private meetings aimed at strengthening Nigeria-UK relations.
