The Abia State Executive Council (SEC) has approved a new policy mandating the use of traditional attire by government officials and civil servants as part of its drive to promote local craftsmanship and deepen cultural identity.
According to the directive, members of the State Executive Council are to appear in traditional outfits on the first Monday of every month, while civil servants across the state will wear theirs every Friday.
Announcing the decision after this week’s SEC meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti at the Government House, Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said the move reflects the government’s commitment to cultural revival and economic empowerment of local artisans.
“This is part of the cultural revolution currently sweeping through our state. By adorning our indigenous fabrics, we are not only showcasing our cultural pride but also encouraging patronage of local designers and craftsmen,” Kanu explained.
He further noted that the initiative goes beyond promoting Igbo identity, as it will help preserve Abia’s rich heritage, bridge cultural gaps, and foster a broader appreciation of the state’s traditional values.
