Abia State authorities have detained an individual, identified as Mr. Benedict Elias, also known as “Star,” on allegations of unauthorized revenue collection at Ariaria International Market.
Mr. Elias was reportedly taken into custody and has been transferred to the Abia State Police Command for further investigation.

According to preliminary findings, Mr. Elias’s official role in revenue collection was terminated in January.

Despite this, he is alleged to have continued collecting revenue, purportedly misrepresenting himself as a relative of the Governor and an associate of the Executive Chairman of the Abia State Internal Revenue Service (ABSIRS), Prof. Ogbonnaya Udochukwu.

During the arrest, authorities reportedly found official documents from the Abia State Government in Mr. Elias’s possession, including a letter titled: “Governor Alex Otti’s Alleged Authoritarian Policies Spark Outrage Among Abia State Local Government Officials as Chairmen Decry New Restrictions on Appointments, Salary Caps, and Revenue Seizure.”

Traders and market executives at Ariaria International Market have alleged that Mr. Elias engaged in unauthorized revenue collection, claiming connections with high-ranking government officials.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the activities and any potential accomplices. Authorities urge the public to report any unauthorized revenue collection to law enforcement agencies to prevent further incidents.
