The abductors of Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, the Parish Priest of Holy Family Catholic Church, Izombe, Imo State, are demanding a ransom of N20 million for his release. Fr. Ubaechu was kidnapped in Ejemekwuru on Sunday evening while en route to attend the annual retreat of priests under the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese.
His abduction was confirmed in a statement by Rev. Fr. Patrick Mbarah, the Chancellor and Secretary of the Archdiocese.
A source within the church, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the kidnappers initially demanded N50 million before reducing the ransom amount. However, conflicting reports suggest figures ranging from N10 million to N20 million.

Parishioners remain deeply concerned for the priest’s safety, urging the state government and security agencies to take swift action for his rescue, as he is a missionary without financial means.
Another parishioner recounted how the kidnappers forced Fr. Ubaechu to remove his white cassock and dragged him from his vehicle before taking him away.
His official vehicle was later recovered by naval personnel in Izombe. Appeals continue for the abductors to reconsider their actions and release the priest unharmed.
